The Cayman Islands has declared Monday, 19 September, the day of the Queen’s state funeral, as a public holiday.
The most recent update on government’s FAQs about topics and events following the passing of the late Queen said the public holiday is part of the 11 days of mourning declared here.
“Schools will be closed on Monday, 19 September in observance of the public holiday which has been declared in the Cayman Islands in honour of Her Late Majesty,” the FAQ added.
The Cayman Islands is also planning its own special service of commemoration.
“Details will be announced later but the service will take place sometime after the State Funeral in the United Kingdom,” it stated.
Queen Elizabeth II passed away at Balmoral Castle, at age 96.
The Government Administration Building and the Clock Tower in George Town have been illuminated in blue, as a tribute which will continue throughout the period of national mourning.
A number of events have also been planned over this period.
Events to come
Starting Monday, the fountain in Heroes Square will be turned off to mark the Queen’s death and will be restarted at the end of the mourning period.
A special meeting of Parliament has been called for Monday at 3pm, to give local legislators the opportunity to express their condolences on the passing of the late Queen.
This Wednesday, church bells around the island will toll for 96 seconds; 1 second for each year of the Queen’s life, starting at 12:30pm.
Sunday has been declared a ‘National Day of Prayer’ and churches are expected to deliver special (provided) prayers ahead of the state funeral.
On Monday 19 Sept., there will be public viewings of the state funeral for the late Queen, the locations for these viewings are to be announced.
Radio stations will also go silent for two minutes as a mark of respect from 12:30pm to 12:32pm on that day.
Governor Martyn Roper and Premier Wayne Panton will travel to London to attend the state funeral at Westminster Abbey. Their spouses, as well as UK Representative Tasha Ebanks Garcia have also been invited to the lying-in-state (at Westminster Hall) and the formal signing of the condolence book at Lancaster House.
The national mourning period formally concludes on 20 Sept.
Floral tributes or bouquets can be left on the steps of the Government Administration Building and the front gates of Government House.
Physical condolence books have been opened to the community and will remain open until the day of the state funeral, and can be found at the Government Administration Building in Grand Cayman and District Administration Building in Cayman Brac.
These buildings are open during usual business hours of 8:30am to 5pm.
