On the evening of Tuesday, 20 Sept., art enthusiasts gathered at Jasmine Villa off West Bay Road for the annual Cayman Watercolours Calendar launch and artwork auction.
Each year, the original framed pieces donated by local artists for the calendar are auctioned off to benefit Jasmine and the National Children’s Voluntary Organisation. The calendars themselves are also revealed for the first time, and sold at the event.
Both students and established painters contributed works, which featured subjects such as beach scenes, local flora and fauna, marine life and Caymanian-style houses.
The front cover – ‘Joy’ – by Bernadette Devlin, got the record bid for the night, with Paul Pearson agreeing to pay $6,600 for the depiction of majestic birds playing on the beach and dock by Pappagallo in West Bay.
Devlin was the deputy head of St. Ignatius Catholic School in Cayman until she retired and returned to her homeland of Ireland. She has not only contributed to the calendar in the past, but has also encouraged students to step forward and participate.
Shilpa Tagalpallewar, Caroline Courtis, Gabrielle Wheaton, Tiffany Polloni and Joanna Austin were some of the other artists whose works were included in the auction.
All pieces went for at least $1,000 each, with the total reaching nearly $30,000. Sales of raffle tickets easily took it over that amount, with prizes such as a stay at Caribbean Club; a gift basket from The Tasting Room; and golf for four at The Ritz-Carlton up for grabs.
Danielle Coleman, board of directors chairperson of Jasmine, thanked everyone who had come out to bid and expressed her gratitude to the artists who had volunteered their pieces for the cause.
