Caymanian gymnast Igor Magalhaes is adjusting to life as a freshman at Loughborough University in Leicestershire, England, and has set his sights on upcoming major competitions.
Magalhaes, 19, started his collegiate chapter last month as a freshman studying international business at Loughborough.
The bronze medallist at the 2019 Central American Artistic Gymnastics Championships and Caribbean Championships winner told the Cayman Compass that he is happy about being able to utilise the higher-quality equipment at his new school.
“I am excited that I am training on better equipment, with some of the apparatus being over foam pits which is safer to learn more advanced skills, and [I don’t have to] fear injury holding me back,” he said.
Training out of Motions Unlimited in George Town for most of his life, Magalhaes has built up a resume of major competitions, including his most recent at the Commonwealth Games where he qualified for the finals for the men’s individual all-around.
Now Magalhaes, who is considered Cayman’s top male gymnast, is looking to continue to make a name for himself in the record books.
“At the moment I have my eyes set on qualifying for the Pan American games in Santiago,” he said. “I have been focusing on learning higher difficulty skills [with] which I can build a more advanced and improved routine when the time comes to compete.”
