Pirates, sailors and wenches lined Seafarers Way on Saturday afternoon for the first full-scale Pirates’ Landing and Float Parade since 2019.
Contrary to its theme, this year’s mock battles played out differently.
It was the Spanish that were landing under feared privateer ‘Castillo de Leon de la Fuentas’, and local pirates joined forces with Governor Martyn Roper to defend the British Caribbean isle.
At 3pm, the sound of grenades echoed across Hog Sty Bay as the Spanish attacked the port.
The marauders poured from two vessels under the black powder smoke of musket fire. Ashore they were confronted by a ragtag band of cut-throat buccaneers brandishing pistols and cutlasses.
The ensuing scuffle was short-lived.
The governor, ably putting on display the fruits of his sword-fighting practice, ensured the attackers were apprehended.
The victory signalled the start of the float parade.
Kids and even dogs dressed in pirate costumes along the route.
The parade included a huge inflatable Cayman Airways jet, a couple dressed as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Phillip, as well as the caged prisoners.
The celebrations continued with a national song and a district heritage costume competition, ending in a fireworks display.
