Webster closes out her 2022 sailing season

Caymanian sailor Charlotte Webster competed in her final regatta for the 2022 sailing season late last month.

The top-ranked sailor in the Cayman Islands finished up this year’s sailing calendar at the EurILCA Senior European Single-handed Dinghy Championships held in Hyéres, on France’s Côte d’Azur, from 14-20 Nov., where she placed 107th out of the 110 competitors racing.

Webster, who attends Exeter University, in southwest England, told the Cayman Compass that she was pleased with her performance considering the level of competition, which consisted of Olympians and other sailing world champions.

“This was my first major senior event and offered the highest level of competition for the ILCA 6 fleet,” she said, via email. “Overall, this event highlighted where my strengths lie and where I need to focus my training in order to improve.”

While Webster didn’t hit the podium, she had cause to celebrate after her busy schedule of racing in strong winds in cold conditions, as she received word that she had been awarded a sports scholarship from her school.

“I am absolutely delighted to have won this scholarship,” she said. “This Sports Bursary will help me continue with my training and competition program and help me to qualify for the Pan Am Games and beyond.”

She added, “Exeter University is the #1 ranked sailing university in the country and this award gives me more recognition and exposure and I am very grateful to the organisation.”

Webster told the Compass that she would be returning to Cayman for the holidays next month.
