Visitors and residents alike have been entertained over the years by the expert talents of Earl La Pierre, a master of the steel pan.
Now, his contribution to music and promotion of this unique instrument will be celebrated at ‘CAYPAN: Steel Pan Through The Ages – A Celebration of Earl La Pierre’, hosted by music producer and steel pannist Zarek Deosaran, and held at the Harquail Theatre on 15 Dec. at 6:30pm.
In 1986, La Pierre brought the steel pan to the Cayman Islands to perform as part of the Pirates Week Festival. He has since gone on to teach thousands of primary, secondary and tertiary students.
In 2010, La Pierre was given the Cayman Islands Gold cross award for a lifetime of high quality engagement in the preservation and celebration of Caymanian culture. Furthermore, he has carried Caymanians abroad to share their culture and perform at the Toronto Caribbean Carnival (formerly Caribana).
There will be performances and a panel at the CAYPAN event, discussing the history of the steel pan in the Cayman Islands.
The panel will feature Chambria Dalhouse, an accomplished film scorer and arranger whose acclaims include a nation-uniting performance performed at Buckingham Palace for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. She will be joined by band leader of the Fresh Carnival Mas Band Olujimi ‘Jimmeh’ La Pierre, who has performed with the world-famous Trinidadian artist, Machel Montano.

Deosaran is a Caymanian music producer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist based in New York City. A cultural ambassador for the Cayman Islands, he has performed across the United States, Canada and the Cayman Islands. His song ‘Down low’ is set to be featured in Dani Coronado’s NYU Tisch Collaborative Arts film ’18 Roses’.
He has co-written songs with internationally acclaimed artists including Grammy-nominated producer Fermin Suero Jr, as well as Cy Leo, Lucca DL and Julia Rose Segal.
