Cayman Islands swimmer Jordan Crooks has made it into the finals of the 100 metre freestyle in the FINA World Swimming Championships in Australia.
Crooks swam a personal best of 45.55 seconds in the semi-final in Melbourne on Wednesday, securing his position in the finals, which will be held at 3:42am on Thursday, 15 Dec. (Cayman time).
Delighting in Crooks’ success, David Wight, MP for George Town West, took to the floor of Parliament Wednesday to say, “I do not doubt that Jordan will be world champion.”
Crooks’ semi-finals performance positions him with the fastest time heading into the finals, ahead of Olympic gold medalist Kyle Chalmers and defending champion Alessandro Miress.
It was the second time during the championships that Crooks beat his previous personal best times.
The University of Tennessee standout swam a staggering 45.61 seconds during his heat, which earned him a national record and his ticket to the semi-finals.
Now the 20-year-old is in contention for a gold medal, and Wight believes he can pull it off, in what would be a historic accomplishment for the Cayman Islands and the Crooks family.
“Jordan is making waves and making Cayman proud,” Wight said, as he congratulated Crooks and his Jillian who also competed in the championships in Melbourne.
