Lourenco remembers Pele with 52-year-old souvenir
An 81-year-old Brazilian goalkeeper, Sebastiao Luiz Lourenco, who saved Pelé’s penalty on 12 May 1971, has kept the ball till today.
Lourenco, who played for Sao Bento at the time, remains the only known goalkeeper alive who saved a penalty kick from the late Pelé.
The game was in the 1971 Brazilian national championship, and even though Sao Bento lost 0-1, Lourenco actually felt proud to be able to survive Pelé’s goal attack and kept the ball after all these years.
