Jordan Crooks secured gold at the NCAA Division I Swimming & Diving Championships in the 50-yard freestyle event on Thursday evening, 23 March, at the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
It’s the second major win for Crooks in three months, having claimed gold at the World Championships in December.
Crooks, 20, clocked 18.32 in the finals to take gold, becoming only the second athlete from the Cayman Islands to take first at the NCAA Division I Championships after track-and-fielder Kareem Streete-Thompson, who won in 1995.
Crooks, a sophomore at the University of Tennessee, entered the prelims with the fastest time of the year at 17.93, which he recorded during the SEC Championships last month.
During the finals against some of the best swimmers in the world, Crooks came out blazing and, despite being second off the turn, beat Josh Liendo by .08 seconds, to secure another historic win for his school and nation.
