A tide gauge on Panama Canal in Creek, Cayman Brac, was found destroyed with parts of it missing on Thursday, 18 May.
Staff made the discovery when the device, which is used to measure and record changes in the level of the ocean, went offline earlier in the day.

They found the lock on the gauge’s casing had been tampered with and it had been opened up, police said in a press release.
It was damaged with several wires cut.
Its antenna, solar panel and two marine batteries had been stolen.
Police officers were called to the scene just before 2:20pm and recorded photos of the damage.
