After celebrating 30 years of the Flowers Sea Swim in 2022, organisers are hoping to surpass last year’s event, when hundreds take to the water for the mega one-mile competition.

Head organiser for the swim, Anup Itwar, confirmed with the Compass on Tuesday, 13 June, that over 700 swimmers have registered for the swim.

Among the participants, six elite foreign athletes will be diving in this Saturday, 17 June,  including Bulgarian Nina Sadauskas, who has competed at three Olympic Games, and husband, Lithuanian Mindaugas Sadauskas, a world championship competitor, who will be first-time visitors to Cayman.

Several recognised local swimmers, including Olympians Shaune and Brett Fraser, long-distance athlete Kerri Kanuga, and Heather Harvey (née Roffey), who swam when eight months pregnant at last year’s event, will also compete this Saturday.

All proceeds raised from the event will benefit the Swim Free programme, through which a mobile pool will be transported to Cayman’s schools to teach children to swim.

The race will start from Coral Beach at 2pm, ending at the Villas of the Galleon. The Port Authority has advised all non-emergency vessels to stay about 500 yards from shore along the race route between 2pm and 4:30pm.
