Returning home from the 2023 NACAC U23 and U18 Championships in San José, Costa Rica, with a pair of silver medals, Cayman’s Andrew Stone proved it’s not just about how high you can jump… but also how far you can jump.
Stone, 17, secured the first of his two medals at the games with a second-place finish in the men’s U18 high jump on 22 July, clearing 2.07 metres to match his own personal best and finish just 0.03m behind gold-medal-winning Chavez Penn of Jamaica.
The following day, Stone leapt 7.36m in the final of the men’s U18 long jump to return to the number two spot on the podium with his second piece of silverware. Anthony Chin Jr, 15, joined Stone in that long jump final, finishing eighth overall with his best jump of 6.59m.

Meanwhile, Mikayla Brown got in on the weekend’s action with a bronze medal in the women’s U18 shot put.
Brown, 16, launched the 3-kilogram shot a distance of 12.65m on her sixth and final attempt to grab third place.
Also competing in Costa Rica were Ashantae Graham, YaNelli Dawkins and Michail Michelin.
Graham’s best performance of 5.91m in the women’s U23 long jump final – an improvement on her Island Games bronze-medal-winning 5.36m jump just a few weeks ago – earned the 20-year-old team captain a fifth-place finish, while Dawkins, 18, threw 35.50m for 10th place overall in the women’s U23 1kg discus final. On the track, Michelin, 16, stopped the clock at 23.20 seconds in his men’s U18 200m semifinal to finish fifth in his heat and 10th overall in that event.

With three medals over the three days of competition, Cayman placed 15th in the final medal table out of the 20 countries from North America and the Caribbean.
