Not content with her regional junior title, Cayman’s Holly McLean added another prestigious title to her growing trophy cabinet this weekend.
McLean, won the ladies individual title at the 2023 Caribbean Amateur Golf Championships, held from 26 to 28 July at the Plantations Beach and Golf Resort in Tobago.
McLean won by a single stroke from the Dominican Republic’s Yae Eun Kim, with an overall score of 1-over-par for the 3-round tournament.
McLean battled some difficult conditions during the rain-affected tournament, including multiple downpours during her final round.
She was able to hold on to her overnight lead despite a late charge from Kim who shot a final round 3-under par 69 to push McLean all the way to the final putt.
McLean, who won the 2022 tournament as well, was thrilled to successfully defend her title and add to her successes this year after winning the junior version of the same tournament earlier this month.
In the men’s side of the competition, Giles Hobday, Danny DeQuintal, Todd Purton, Marcus McCarey, Stuart Reed and Clark Weatherall made up the Cayman Islands team. The men’s team had a few positive results but struggled overall with the tricky layout and conditions.
Giles Hobday, team captain, said, “It was a great learning experience for everyone, especially our up-and-coming young players, Danny and Todd.
“The course punished poor shots and the rain and wind made things challenging.
“A huge thanks to the Trinidad and Tobago Golf Association and the Caribbean Golf Association for successfully hosting and organizing the tournament. A massive thank you as well to our sponsors, Grant Thornton, for providing the support we need to send a team and continue to develop the top level of the game in the Cayman Islands.”
