The Cayman Islands continues to establish itself as a financial and creative hub within the Caribbean for the music and entertainment industry with the establishment of the newly formed Caribbean Chapter of the Songwriters of North America (SONA).
With a mission of empowering and advocating for songwriters, SONA is best known for playing a pivotal role in crafting, lobbying for and the passage of the Music Modernization Act in the United States and pushing for songwriters to receive fair pay, better working environments and more.
Last November, SONA hosted songwriting camps in Grand Cayman which were well attended by both aspiring and seasoned singer-songwriters. The songwriters are now coming together to launch the Caribbean Chapter of SONA by putting on the SONA+C Launch Show on Saturday 9th September 2023 at the Arts & Recreation Centre in Camana Bay. The show will feature Jason JG Gilbert, Beneil Miller, James Geary, Ben Hud and many more local singer-songwriters followed by the Swanky Kitchen Band.
Funds raised from this event will be used to cover the costs of sending Swanky Kitchen Band to Los Angeles to perform at the SONA Warrior Awards on 29th October 2023, where the Caribbean Chapter of SONA will be officially announced to the public. Additional proceeds will be used for SONA+C projects such as songwriting camps, education, advocacy and other projects to assist and support songwriters and the music industry. SONA+C is also selling raffle tickets with the winner being drawn at the SONA+C Launch Show on 9th September. The prize includes round-trip airfare for 2 donated by Cayman Airways, one week stay at the Beverly Hills Hotel donated by the Dorchester Group, a tour of the iconic recording studios in LA hosted by SONA and $1000 USD cash. Monthly SONA+C Studio Jams will be taking place for interested songwriters at LionFish Studios, the first of which will be on Thursday 7th September 2023. Founding member and President of SONA Michelle Lewis and SONA CEO Kellie Brown will be in attendance at both the Studio Jam and at the Launch Show.
