50 years ago: Compass marks 1st year; shares in Governor’s Harbour

The 12 Sept.1973 issue of the Cayman Compass was especially notable as it marked the first anniversary of the newspaper, with several items on the front page related to the special date. Taking pride of place was a congratulatory message from Acting Governor D. V. Watler, who noted, “The importance of the news media in the Islands cannot be overestimated and their responsibility to Government and the people is great.”

There was also a thank you from the newspaper for all the support received over the first year and an ‘Anniversary Acrostic’, with each line starting with a letter from the name of the publication.

Following on from the previous week’s story on the purchase of Governor’s Harbour, was an article announcing that Caymanians were being offered shares in the development. All told, there were 400,000 shares for sale at $2.50 each, available only to “Caymanians and persons with Caymanian status”.

And, finally, ‘The Talk Of The Islands’ pointed to a ‘new concept’ for Cayman – Kodak microfilm equipment introduced by Cayman Business Machines. According to a Kodak representative, the “prosperous and growing” Cayman Islands “needs microfilm to insure and protect the vital information and documentation being created and also the information recorded in the past”.
