Music lovers filled the John Gray High School auditorium Wednesday to enjoy a recital by Caymanian cellist Dequan Smith and his friend, pianist Adam Heron, as part of the Cayman Arts Festival’s monthly offerings.

During the one-hour performance, which featured pieces by German composers Bach, Beethoven and Brahms, the friends exchanged smiles and chuckles as they shared their love for performing that repertoire.

Their first major collaboration took place four years ago in the UK, where the two, alongside violinist Christopher Quaid, performed pianos trios by Mozart and Rachmaninoff. Since then, Smith, 21, and Heron, 24, have formed a musical partnership they hope will continue for years to come.

Seamless collaboration

Marius Gaina, Cayman Arts Festival executive director, told the Compass their seamless collaboration was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Speaking on Smith’s growth, Gaina said the young cellist stands as a shining testament to CAF’s after-school programmes.

“From the formative years spent here [in Cayman] to his time at Wells Cathedral School in the UK and his current pursuit of excellence at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Dequan’s journey has been marked by unwavering dedication,” he said.

Gaina said Smith remains a profound source of inspiration for budding young students in Cayman, embodying the potential that can be unlocked through dedication and mentorship.

Heron who hails from the UK and was a 2018 BBC Young Musician finalist, said this is his second time visiting the island and it is one of his favourite places.

The pianist also performed in the intimate setting of the George Town Public Library Thursday night. He showcased the rare keyboard compositions of the 18th century Guadeloupean Creole composer and virtuoso violinist, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

Heron’s musical journey has also included performing some of his own compositions.

Last year, he graduated with a master of philosophy from the University of Cambridge. Since then has been enjoying a busy performance schedule.

“Upon returning to Europe, I will begin preparations for upcoming recitals and concertos through the UK, as well as an upcoming tour of both Romania and Hungary,” Heron said.

The recent recitals usher in the return of CAF’s Piano Festival, now in its second edition, which will be held next month. For more information about upcoming events, visit the Cayman Arts Festival website.
