Caymanian swimmer Sierrah Broadbelt is off to a good start with her new school, Mount Kelly, after dominating during the Exeter October Meet, held from 8-9 Oct., at the Plymouth Life Centre – where she claimed her first Cayman senior short course national record.
“My recent performance in Plymouth, Devon was a humbling moment,” Broadbelt told the Compass.
Broadbelt, 15, recently joined Mount Kelly – a private independent boarding school in Tavistock, England. In her first competition for her school and first UK swim meet, she won gold medals in all six of her races.
She bested a full pool of swimmers in the 400 metre, 200m, and 100m individual medley events, along with the 50m butterfly, 100m fly and 200m fly.
“Me making my first Cayman Islands senior national record and a club record within the first five weeks of the swim season made me feel accomplished,” she said. “This performance really showed me why I came to Mount Kelly.”
The swim that placed her in the Cayman record books was the 200m fly. Broadbelt touched the wall in 2:15.60 – breaking Olympian Lara Butler’s record of 2:15.94, set in 2015, and earning her first senior national record.
She also clocked her first sub-five minute time in the 400m individual medley, where she finished in 4:59.59, and etching her closer to another Butler senior record of 4:56.29.
As Broadbelt continues to train for upcoming competitions, she said her new school will no doubt enhance her capabilities as she represents Mount Kelly with ‘Cayman in her heart’.
“I am fortunate to have access to top-notch swimming facilities and coaches which have helped me improve my strokes and race strategies tremendously,” she said.
“The independent side of being at boarding school has developed me as a person due to everything being on campus, allowing me to balance my swimming and academics excellently,” she added, noting that she has made “awesome friends”.
