50 years ago: Filming in Cayman; Middle East war

Taking pride of place on the front page of the 10 Oct. 1973 edition of the Cayman Compass was ‘Two Film Productions Now Being Made In Cayman’.  One was a motion picture about “the banking history of the Cayman Islands as a tax haven”, 20 years before that notorious film (at least in Cayman) ‘The Firm’ came out. The other production was an episode for ‘Ports of Call’, an hour-long TV show in Miami. Of particular interest is the accompanying photo for the story which features Frances Bodden as ‘One Of The Stars Of The Show’.

On a much more serious note – and, unfortunately, all-too-relevant today, with the recent horrific attack in Israel – was the article, ‘Middle East War Spreads’, this one about the Iraqi Air Force raids on Israeli targets in the Golan Heights after Israeli planes attacked the Syrian capital of Damascus.

The editorial in that week’s Compass was about issues with work permits. The first sentence says it all: “Long delays experienced by firms in processing work permits for personnel is causing a great deal of concern.” It added that employers in some industries, including banking and finance, have been “forced to wait for months” before applications are approved by the Caymanian Protection Board. While noting that recently the board’s workload “has increased tremendously”, and that the “interests of Caymanians must be protected”, the editorial points out that the “time has come… when the situation should be reviewed so that all concerned would be able to make their respective contributions to the progress of the Cayman Islands, more expeditiously and more effectively”.

And, finally, a good-news story on the ‘First Woman In Construction’ included a photo of Vadlee Douglas, a mother of three who previously worked in a liquor store. She said she was inspired to switch to construction after “successes in repairing anything in her father’s house”, though also admitting she was attracted to the building industry by the high wages the men received.
