After the success of his 2023 Hopscotch summer camp, with 12 kids diving into the world of music, Caymanian Grammy-award winner, record producer and songwriter Jason ‘JG’ Gilbert is taking the local music industry to the next level by opening a recording school.
“Working with the kids during the summer was very exciting and inspiring, to say the least,” Gilbert told the Compass. “The children had a very unfiltered approach to creating music which was very refreshing.”
He added, “Using my experience, I was able to guide their raw creative output to successfully complete an EP titled ‘Hopscotch Presents – Kids Summer Music Camp Vol 1’.”
Following the summer camp, Gilbert has been working with students, through what he calls the “songs” after-school programme to run concurrently with the academic year.
Gilbert said it’s always a joy to work with the next generation of Caymanian artists at Hopscotch Studios, which he manages.
“Creating music is a great form of self expression which builds confidence or self-esteem. The programme encourages collaboration, as completing a song is often a team effort requiring different individual strengths.”
The recording school will open 9 Jan. 2024. Two groups will be offered, with a maximum of six students each (ages 11-16). The programme will be run in-studio and via Zoom.
According to the school’s website, the introductory songs programme includes “everything you need to know about creating a song from scratch to releasing and promoting the song”. It will consist of such areas as artist development, songwriting, music business, music production, being a DJ, and auto engineering.
“We will cover everything from project planning, distribution and touring, writing lyrics and arranging songs, copyrighting, composition and arrangement, to mixing and mastering, contracts and invoicing, and evolution of equipment,” Gilbert said.
The cost is $400 per month, or $350 if registered by 31 Dec. The classes will be divided into terms. The winter term starts 9 Jan. 2024 and ends on 28 Mar. The spring term runs from 8 Apr. through 28 June, and the fall term from 9 Sept. through 14 Dec.
