Caymanian swimmers Kyra Rabess and Alison Jackson both showed up in a big way for their school, the University of Northern Colorado, claiming records and podium places at the Western Athletic Conference Championships.
Rabess, a freshman at UNC who has been on a tear since she arrived, swam the 1,000-yard freestyle during the WAC Championships on 2 March, finishing in a school record time of 9:58.33 and earning a silver medal.
It followed another record-breaking performance at the championships, which were held at the Phar Natatorium, in Texas, from 28 Feb. to 2 March.
On Thursday, 29 Feb., Rabess eclipsed her previous best time of 4:53.03 in the 500-yard free, touching the wall in 4:49.79 – the best time in UNC history and good enough for fourth place.
That same day, Jackson, a senior at UNC, finished on the podium, placing third in the 50-yard free in a time of 23.20.
During day one of the event, the two Caymanian women made up half of the 800-yard free relay team, along with Elizabeth Mayer and Martina Yuki Trionfetti, earning a silver medal in 7:16.7 – the quickest time in UNC history.
Jackson also was part of another UNC quartet, in the 200-yard medley relay, where she helped her squad to third in a time of 1:40.05.
