Caymanian actress Rita Estevanovich is featured in a new political art film, ‘Beacons’, directed by Slovenian filmmaker Jasmina Cibic, which is being screened as part of a new exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

The West Bay native, who plays the ‘Interpreter’ in the film, told the Compass, “Working with Jasmina Cibic and the team was very special. We shot my scene at Lake Bled in Ljubljana, Slovenia.”

‘Beacons’ is being screened as part of an exhibition at the Irish Museum of Modern Art.

Estevanovich said, “I essentially received a message and delivered this message, in my second tongue, Spanish, to an audience of forest on the balcony of the former Yugoslav president Josip ‘Tito’ Broz’s private villa overlooking Lake Bled.”

According to the description of the film on the director’s website, “Beacons is a cinematographic journey portraying eight women who distil the archive of cultural workers from countries of the Non-Aligned Movement into a musical score.

“They translate and decipher words into sounds, music and choreography.”

A call for political change

Estevanovich, who has appeared in several projects, including as Gina Miller in ‘Bloody Difficult Women’; the interviewer in Amazon Prime’s ‘On Red, White & Royal Blue’; and Dr. Lee in ‘Black Cake’ on Hulu, said working on ‘Beacons’ offered a “unique opportunity”, that she welcomed because of its complexity.

She was attracted to the project because of “Jasmina’s perspective on the missing female voice in the political sphere, its reimagining of historical documents calling for change”.

She continued, “Jasmina is an artistic genius and learning from her has been a gift.”

Estevanovich also noted that the film afforded her the opportunity to sing, and added, “Jasmina is a beacon herself and will be for generations to come.”

‘Beacons’ will be screened at the ‘Self-Determination: A Global Perspective’ exhibition in the Irish Museum of Modern Art through 8 April. Visit the ‘Beacons’ website for more information.
