It’s Sunday morning, and a steady stream of customers are coming for their coffee fix at a quaint little spot in South Sound. Cafecito Coffee Shop is housed in a tiny trailer located on the corner of Walkers Road.
“People like it because it’s unique,” says Hunter Walton, who opened the coffee shop with his wife Jeydi in the autumn of 2023. “We love the community here, and we try to make it a family friendly place.”
Cafecito features locally roasted coffee along with a selection of Belgian Liège waffles.
Hunter used recycled materials to build the shop, including his grandmother’s hurricane shutters for the roof, and reclaimed plywood siding.
“I’ve always been obsessed with tiny houses, and I thought, ‘what about a tiny shop?’,” he says. “I immediately thought of coffee and waffles.”
Though he had no experience in the food industry, the venture seemed a good fit.
COMMUNITY VIBE
Hunter enjoys the interaction with his customers and the area’s welcoming community vibe.
“I like meeting people, and talking to people,” he says. “The majority of our customers are local, but we get quite a few tourists too – we had people staying in East End coming here three or four times a week.”
The coffee menu features everything from espresso, cappuccino and latte to ice coffee, flat white and Americano. There’s also coconut water, lemonade and sodas.
The Belgian Liège waffles – which the couple perfected from an online recipe – come in a variety of flavours such as cinnamon and Nutella. Jeydi – a Cuban national – has added some international flavours including guava cheese, dulce de leche and the shop’s namesake, cafecito, a type of Cuban coffee.
There are a couple of shaded picnic tables for customers to enjoy their waffles and fresh brews, with plans to enhance the seating area.
Cafecito is open from 6:30am to 12pm every day, except Mondays.
