Police confirmed that three people died after a serious collision that occurred on Shamrock Road early Monday morning, and they are working to identify the victims.

Two other people in the crash were hospitalised.

Five vehicles were involved, according to an update from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service. Officers reported to the crash site, near Coral Bay Village, at about 12:15am and extinguished two vehicles that had caught fire.

An attending doctor at the hospital pronounced the three occupants of a black Honda Fit deceased.

“These victims have not yet been identified, and police are appealing for information that may assist with the identification process,” the press release said.

Emergency responders took two other people involved in the crash to the hospital, where they received treatment for “what appear to be non-life-threatening injuries”.

Police did not specify which vehicle they were from but said a black Honda Accord and white Toyota Tundra were involved.

‘Major incident’ declared

Police temporarily closed a section of Shamrock Road in the immediate aftermath of the crash while they rendered aid and launched the investigation into what they consider a “major incident”.

The three deaths doubles the number of road fatalities seen so far this year, with two occurring in March.

The Traffic and Roads Policing Unit is currently investigating what happened, and police are urging witnesses to come forward.

“Investigators are aware that numerous calls are being made to [the Health Services Authority] and funeral homes, and we ask that all enquiries relating to possible victims are directed to the RCIPS Casualty Bureau at 1-345-649-4354,” the release said.

In addition, anonymous tips can be provided directly to the RCIPS through its confidential tip line at 949-7777, or via its website. Tips can also be submitted anonymously through the Cayman Crime Stoppers website or app.
