The University College of the Cayman Islands will host two STEM camps this summer, including a version of the popular camp in Cayman Brac.
The annual event, held in Grand Cayman since 2017, allows students, ages 10 to 13, to explore science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands-on, educational activities.
The camps, led by Antoinette Gayle, will include 3D printing and design, vlogging, science experiments, robotics, drones and other workshops designed to showcase the diversity of STEM careers.
“STEM employment is among the fastest-growing sectors globally,” Gayle said in a press release.
“From computing and healthcare to engineering and more, STEM roles are pivotal in driving innovation and changing our world. We want Cayman’s young people to understand the importance of STEM development and be excited about the possibility of becoming change agents in their communities.”
Interested families are encouraged to apply early because slots fill quickly. To participate, students must submit an application and short essay explaining why they want to attend the STEM camp. Participants will be chosen based on their learning goals and the reasons they hope to join the camp.
Applicants should show “a willingness to learn; excellent communication skills; an outgoing personality; and a sense of enterprise,” UCCI said in a press release.
The Cayman Brac camp, sponsored by the Ministry of Education, runs 2-4 July from 9:00am-3:30 pm at the UCCI Cayman Brac Campus. This camp is free of charge to participants.
The Grand Cayman camp, sponsored by Enterprise Cayman, runs 8-12 July from 9:00am-4:00pm at the UCCI campus. Registration is $200.
The camps include a welcome package, activity kits, lunch, snacks and a certificate of participation. Students will also receive a pack of materials, including robots and supplies, to take home and continue learning. Additional supplies are provided by the Water Authority and the Book Nook.
The online application opens Monday, 3 June and will close when spaces are filled.
