Video | Cayman recovers from Beryl, a test run for the season

The Cayman Islands entered a Hurricane Warning on Tuesday, forcing residents to make emergency preparations in anticipation of Hurricane Beryl, a major category 3 storm.

After witnessing the devastation Beryl dealt to the eastern Caribbean, Cayman Islands residents feared a repeat of Hurricane Ivan, which devastated Grand Cayman 20 years ago this season.

Volunteers turned out to the Cayman Islands Humane Society to pick up foster animals in anticipation of flooding at the shelter facility.

Residents also rushed to board up windows to protect homes from hurricane-force winds and place sandbags around entryways to prevent indoor flooding.

The storm was seen as a test run of the islands’ preparedness for what is forecast to be an extremely active hurricane season.

Low-lying neighbourhoods experienced flooding and many, like the residents of Windsor Village, reported structural damage, but overall, the Cayman Islands fared well, avoiding a direct hit from Beryl.
