Public consultations on the proposed development plan for the islands are set to resume this week following a temporary suspension due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl.
An updated Planning Statement, which will form the basis of the new plan known as PlanCayman, is currently open for public consultation. Several meetings are planned on Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands.
Those meetings had been postponed ahead of Hurricane Beryl’s passage on 3 and 4 July.
The closing date for submission of comments on the draft document has also been extended to 6 Aug., 2024, a Planning Ministry statement said on the weekend.
The Planning Ministry advised that the remaining consultations for the Planning Statement, the first stage of the PlanCayman consultation process, will resume starting in Little Cayman on 15 July at the Little Cayman Beach Resort from 7pm-9pm.
In-person sessions are scheduled for East End, Cayman Brac, Savannah/Newlands and North Side, along with a virtual session.
The ministry said the meetings “are vital for collecting feedback that will shape the future policies and strategies of the Cayman Islands”.
The proposed development plan for the islands has been in the works for several years.

The existing National Development Plan was drawn up in 1997, and is widely acknowledged as being outdated, considering the increase in population, development, and tourist numbers since then.
The new draft plan, drawn up by the Central Planning Authority, the Development Control Board which oversees in the Sister Islands, and the Ministry and Department of Planning, is a 30-page document that outlines planning zones and ‘overlay’ zones, as well as other considerations, such as the subdivision of land, transportation and infrastructure.
“We urge all residents of Grand Cayman, Cayman Brac, and Little Cayman to engage in these vital discussions. Your insights and feedback are essential in refining the PlanCayman Planning Statement to effectively support sustainable development across our islands,” the Ministry statement said.
