The Grant Thornton Cayman U19 rugby team recently traveled to Mexico to participate in the RAN U19 Competition at FC Total in Querétaro, Mexico.
The event had teams from USA South, Trinidad & Tobago, Bermuda, Mexico and Cayman. Unfortunately due to Hurricane Beryl the Jamaican team were unable to travel to Mexico for the tournament.
Ernesto Sainz, President of Mexico Rugby, commented that “we strongly believe that for the athletes of our Region, competition is everything and by bringing them these kinds of opportunities we are helping to develop more rugby structures locally and internationally.”
The young and dynamic Grant Thornton Cayman U19 team showcased their talent and enthusiasm, engaging in a series of closely contested matches. They played some entertaining rugby, demonstrating both skill and determination.
In their first match against Mexico, the Grant Thornton Cayman U19 team narrowly lost by seven points (0-7), reflecting their competitive spirit and ability to challenge a strong opponent. Another closely fought game saw them lose to Trinidad and Tobago by just two points (3-5), underscoring their resilience and potential.
Coach Jamie Barnwell said, “despite these narrow defeats, the newly formed Cayman U19 team made fantastic memories both on and off the field. Their experience in Mexico was enriched not only by the competition but also by the camaraderie and support from players, parents, and the host nation.”
Special thanks go to the players for their hard work and dedication, to the parents for their unwavering support, and to Mexico for hosting such a wonderful and memorable tournament. This experience will undoubtedly serve as a valuable stepping stone in the development of these young rugby players.
