The Cayman Islands has a new 200-metre butterfly national record, after a valiant medal-winning swim by Caymanian Sierrah Broadbelt at the British National Summer Swimming Championships, on Tuesday, 23 July.

Broadbelt stopped the clock in a historic time of 2:16.79 to better her previous time of 2:20 flat – set in a gold medal performance at the Dubai Open Swimming Championship earlier this year – and breaking countrywoman Lara Butler’s national record which stood for eight years.

“It’s been a long time coming,” Broadbelt told the Compass. “I’ve been pushing all season in training and it’s really nice to see that my hard work has paid off.”

Though Broadbelt trailed in fifth for most of the race at the Ponds Forge Aquatics Arena in Sheffield, England, she was able pick up speed in the last 50 metres, ultimately beating Butler’s 02:17.50, set in February of 2016 – when Broadbelt was just 7 years old.

“I’m very happy to be the new senior record holder for the 200m fly long course,” she added.

Her performance earned her a bronze behind Seren Tallantyre, who took silver and winner Coco Croxford.

Broadbelt will continue competition at the event until 26 July, racing in the 50m, 100m fly and 400m individual events.
