Charlotte Webster made her Olympic sailing debut in the Bay of Marseille, France, on Thursday, 1 Aug., finishing 41st in her first of 10 races in the women’s dinghy event.
“Today’s race was really tricky, and I went … with the game plan, which was to go left because my pre-start test said the left was being favoured,” Webster said after her race.
“I disregarded part of the forecast that said when the wind would drop it was going to go right, so I ended up losing a lot of boats that way.”
The second race of the day was postponed due to a lack of wind at Marseille Marina.
The women’s dinghy event is scheduled to take place over the next four days, with two races per day.
However, with the race being postponed on Thursday, Webster will need to compete three times tomorrow.
Webster noted that at the starting line she was nervous but said she can do a lot better and that is the plan heading into tomorrow’s races.
“I look forward to the next nine races where I can really show where I deserve to be,” she said. “I don’t think today’s race was a good estimate where my position is but overall, I think there were some positives.”
Should Webster qualify for the medal race, that competition will take place on 6 Aug.
