To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Hurricane Ivan, the award-winning short film ‘Ivan’, written and directed by Caymanian filmmaker Jazz Pitcairn, will have its local debut at Camana Bay Cinemas next month.
The 13 Sept. film premiere will feature two exclusive screenings at 7pm and 8pm at Camana Bay Cinema.
It will be followed by a behind-the-scenes video and post-screening Q&A session featuring Pitcairn, producer Nikkia Moulterie and the film’s star Sasha Lane.

‘Ivan’, which debuted internationally in 2023, tells the story of the life-changing events of Hurricane Ivan, which devastated the Cayman Islands in September 2004.
It takes viewers on an emotional journey of a mother’s love, strength and courage in the midst of disaster. The film also raises awareness of the increasing impact of climate change and the underrepresented Caribbean communities it most affects.
“My hope is that Ivan serves as both a reminder and a tribute to the endurance and unity of the Caymanian people,” Pitcairn told the Cayman Compass.

“I want audiences to see themselves in this story and feel a deep connection to our history and culture,” she said.
Pitcairn added, “Through Ivan, I hope to spark a conversation about the power of community and the importance of resilience. My wish is that Caymanians leave the theatre feeling empowered by our shared history and motivated to continue building a stronger future together.”
The production involved some 35 Caymanians in the cast and crew. Since the film’s release, it has been accepted into several Oscar-qualifying film festivals, and won awards including best score for an international film at the Garden State Film 2024 Festival.
It was also nominated in 2023 for a Hollywood Music in Media Award for best score in a short film (live action).
From script to screen, Pitcairn said every moment has been “a labour of love, and seeing the film resonate with audiences, especially here in Cayman, is a dream come true”.
For Pitcairn, sharing ‘Ivan’ with a Caymanian audience is “the most important part of this journey” for her.
The film is a tribute to “the resilience of the Caymanian people. Not just a story about survival but a celebration of our community, our strength and our spirit… I hope it resonates deeply with everyone who sees it,” she said.
There are plans to develop a full-length feature film based on ‘Ivan’, Pitcairn said, adding she is seeking financing for the project.
The premiere will begin at 6pm with an exclusive red-carpet celebration at Abacus in Camana Bay.
