Camana Bay Cinema Staff Complete Alcohol Training with the NDC

The National Drug Council (NDC) is pleased to announce the successful completion of two rounds of TIPS (Training for Intervention ProcedureS) Concessions training with the staff of Camana Bay Cinema. This partnership, aimed at promoting responsible alcohol service, ensures that cinema employees are fully prepared and equipped to serve and sell alcohol professionally while safeguarding against underage sales and maintaining the family-friendly environment for which the cinema is known.

Brenda Watson, Director of the National Drug Council, emphasised the broader impact of this initiative:

At the NDC, one of our strategic goals is to establish industry-wide standards for the responsible sale and service of alcohol across the Island. By working closely with businesses like the Cinema, we aim to enhance professionalism and ensure that alcohol consumption remains safe, controlled, and in line with local laws. This is just one step in our ongoing commitment to promoting responsible alcohol use across all sectors.”

The TIPS Concessions programme is specifically designed to train staff in environments where alcohol is served alongside events, such as cinemas and concert venues. The programme focuses on preventing alcohol sales to underage or intoxicated individuals while maintaining the intended atmosphere of the venue. The cinema has taken proactive measures in adopting this training, which not only aligns with its values but also supports the cinema’s commitment to creating a safe and enjoyable experience for all patrons.

Corey Randolph, General Manager of Camana Bay Cinema, highlighted the importance of this training for his staff and the venue’s long-standing relationship with the NDC:

Our cinema is committed to creating a welcoming environment for families while responsibly serving alcohol to our adult patrons. That is why we reached out to the National Drug Council to ensure our team is trained to handle these responsibilities. This training, which has become mandatory in many jurisdictions globally, is crucial for maintaining the balance we strive for at the Cinema. We are proud to have started this partnership with the NDC back in 2018 when our staff first received their On-Premises certifications and look forward to continuing this important collaboration.”

Simon Miller, TIPS Trainer with the NDC, added that the training is tailored to meet the specific needs of the cinema environment:

While the staff at the cinema was previously trained under our TIPS On-Premise programme, which is more applicable to environments like bars and restaurants, the Concessions training is directly suited for spaces like the cinema, where the focus is on maintaining a controlled, family-friendly setting.”

The NDC offers several TIPS training options, including TIPS On-Premises, designed for establishments where alcohol is consumed on-site, such as bars and restaurants, and TIPS Off-Premise, intended for locations where alcohol is sold but not consumed on the premises, like liquor stores. By expanding TIPS Concessions training to venues such as cinemas, concerts, and festivals, the NDC is working to ensure a broader reach of responsible alcohol service across the Cayman Islands.

Watson further revealed that the NDC plans to meet with concert promoters and their teams as part of the council’s overall strategy to promote responsible alcohol consumption in all areas where alcohol is served or sold.

TIPS Concessions training places a strong emphasis on safety and maintaining the integrity of family-oriented spaces. By educating staff, businesses are better equipped to serve alcohol responsibly while preserving the core values of their establishments.

The NDC encourages other businesses in the alcohol industry to get in touch if they are interested in offering this essential training to their staff. As part of its ongoing efforts to promote public safety, the NDC is offering the TIPS programme FREE of charge for new participants.
