Cayman Rugby welcomes Brac community to free course

Cayman Rugby is heading to the Brac to drum up interest in the sport, encouraging residents to participate in a free course.

Led by Mercedes Foy, women’s rugby manager, the course will be held on Saturday, 21 Sept., from 8am-4pm, at the Layman Scott High School.

“We are committed to growing and developing sport and rugby in Cayman Brac,” Foy told the Compass.

Foy has been working to increase the popularity of rugby in Grand Cayman, in particular among women, and hopes to do the same on the Brac.

The course, which is not only open to the high school community but also to the wider Brac population, is made possible with the assistance of the Sister Islands Sports Association and Harold Sanford.

“The course will give participants an understanding of rugby, from practical and theory-based tasks, with engaging fun activities,” she said.

Going beyond the course, Foy said the hope is to someday have Cayman Brac kids participate in camps and tournaments on Grand Cayman.

“We are really excited about this opportunity, growing, developing rugby in Cayman Brac,” she said. “Opening new pathways for students, for young adults, and adults to get involved with Cayman rugby.

“Harold and the Sister Islands sports are committed to getting the Cayman Brac primary and secondary students over for the first time ever to take part in the Cayman rugby festival, which takes place in November.”

She also said that international opportunities could be on the cards for any Bracker who decides to pursue rugby.

Anyone hoping to participate is encouraged to sign up in advance with Sanford or Foy at [email protected] or [email protected].
