George Town has been selected to kick off the return of District Days for this year’s Pirates Week festival celebrations.

The announcement was made during a live drawing at government’s GIS studios Thursday, with district representatives present. The complete lineup comprises North Side on 12 Nov., East End on 13 Nov., West Bay on 14 Nov., and Bodden Town closing things out on 15 Nov.

“This marks the return of our much beloved district days, which will give each district a chance to showcase their unique subculture, as a part of the larger national celebration of Cayman’s rich maritime history, our people, our culture and our heritage,” Culture Minister Dwayne Seymour said at the drawing.

Under the theme ‘Sailing Through Time,’ this year’s activities will be held 8-29 Nov., featuring a “host of interactive activities,” the minister said. “There’s something in store for everyone. There’s an opportunity for every member in our community to participate and celebrate the essence of who we are.”

In previous years, residents and visitors have feasted on a variety of traditional and local cuisine at each district or heritage day celebration, along with enjoying a display of traditional crafts, rope-making and thatch-plaiting demonstrations, dances, storytelling, and old-time games. Schools have also organised field trips for students to learn more about their heritage and culture.

Seymour also called on all vendors or those interested in showcasing their talents to register: “Do you have a food truck, or stall, jerk pan or fish frying caboose, or even an ice-cream truck, if so, we want to hear from you. There are still spaces available for persons offering craft, novelty, and pirate themed items or merchandise. Are you an entertainer, can you dance, juggle, or walk on stilts, if so contact us, are you a fire breather, acrobat or gymnast or perhaps a part of pirate or cultural group, marching band or steel band, we want to hear from you.”

The minister noted that the Sister Islands will have their own special dates for their celebrations, adding that another live press briefing is being planned to publicise more details on the annual events.

The deadline to register to participate in a district day is Friday, 25 Oct. Space is limited and those interested can email [email protected].
