A fishing charter captain and his partner reeled in the $2,500 top prize at the Cayman Islands Angling Club wahoo fishing contest over the weekend.

Julius Hubbell and Kat Watkinson of Reelistik boat charters won the HoosWho Shootout competition by a considerable margin, catching a 63-pound wahoo measuring 64 inches off Seven Mile Beach before 8am on Sunday.

Passengers on their fishing charter joined in the applause for the winning team as they were presented with their prize by Joshua Ebanks, Angling Club vice president, on the dock at George Town Yacht Club on Sunday evening.

“We’re going to Disney World!’ joked Hubbell, who put their luck down to “preparation and opportunity”, adding, “We had a great time.”

“The early bird catches the worm,” said Watkinson, a full-time veterinarian who helps Hubbell with his fishing charter at the weekends, and who credits him with introducing her to fishing, a sport she now loves.

First contest of the season

A total of 22 fishing boats and 82 anglers took part in the HoosWho Shootout on Saturday and Sunday, 1 and 2 Feb., catching 25 wahoos between them. The contest was the first in a series of fishing competitions lined up by the club for the coming year.

Taking second place and a cheque for $1,500 with a wahoo weighing 44.2 lb was Key Card, while third place and $1,000 was picked up by Blind Love with a 44 lb fish.

Liquid Limo won the $500 prize for catching the most weight, which came in at 163.8 lb, while Floyd Moxam of Key Card took home the $1,000 prize for the Angling Club member who caught the heaviest fish, at 44.2lb.

Members of the fishing community enjoyed celebrating the results of the winning crews in the Sunday afternoon sunshine outside George Town Yacht Club, and shared their good luck tips with the Compass.

“You’ve got to have the right time, place, rod, crew, boat, shoes, phase of the moon…” said one angler, while others cautioned against having a banana on board, calling it “unlucky”.
