A Grand Court jury last week convicted Lindsay Kirk Watler of murdering Ian Duffell, who died after being stabbed multiple times in West Bay in 2022.
During the trial, the jury had heard that DNA from Watler, 55, had been found under Duffell’s fingernails.
Duffell, at age 51, suffered severe injuries after being stabbed in the yard of a house on Birch Tree Hill Road on the night of 14 Oct. 2022. He died later in George Town Hospital.
The jury of three men and nine women had heard from Crown prosecutor Candia James-Malcolm that two of the wounds had been fatal with one to his neck and the other to the right side of his chest.
The jurors had heard that police had been called to a disturbance at Kelly’s Bar on Birch Tree Hill Road at about 9:30pm on the night of Duffell’s death, and had told Duffell, who appeared to have been drinking, to leave. About 45 minutes later, he returned to the bar and the police were called again.
He was later captured on CCTV across the Ed Bush Stadium car park, where he had stopped to talk to people in a silver Honda.
A 911 call was made later at about 10:30pm about a stabbing on Birch Tree Hill Road, where police officers found Duffell in the yard of a house bleeding heavily. He was later pronounced dead at hospital.
As well as Watler’s DNA being found under Duffell’s nails, DNA from another unidentified person was also retrieved, the court had heard.
Watler, who had denied killing Duffell, is due to return to court for sentencing at a later date.
