The Cayman Islands Airports Authority has issued a public alert to warn that an ‘Annual Unclaimed Baggage Sale’ at Owen Roberts International Airport advertised on social media is fake.
“The Cayman Islands Airports Authority does not conduct public sales of unclaimed baggage and has no association with this promotion,” the authority said in a statement.
It “strongly advised” members of the public not to click on the link provided in the fake post or to provide any personal or financial information, as doing so may compromise personal data or financial security.
It stated that it is investigating the fraudulent posts, in collaboration with the relevant authorities, and is taking steps to have the content removed from social media platforms.
“Individuals who may have interacted with this post are strongly encouraged to contact their financial institution and monitor their accounts for any unusual activity,” the authority said.
It added, “The CIAA remains committed to the safety and security of its passengers and the integrity of its operations. Official updates and communications will only be shared through the CIAA’s official website caymanairports.com and social media channels, Facebook, Instagram and LinkedIn.”
