Energy waste is a growing issue in Cayman, but solutions exist. The Ministry of Sustainability & Climate Resiliency and Wellness (MSCRW) recently completed an energy efficiency programme, funded by the EU’s RESEMBID, retrofitting 10 National Housing Trust homes and two public buildings. Results showed major savings—especially where residents adopted energy-smart habits, proving small changes can have a big impact.
The data from the MSCRW’s Energy Efficiency Programme confirms that a well-insulated home with efficient cooling requires far less energy to maintain a comfortable temperature. Investing in better insulation, upgrading to energy-efficient air conditioning units, and being mindful of consumption habits can result in noticeable reductions in monthly utility bills.
“The new air conditioning unit was exactly what I needed. It was adjusted to suit my home’s layout which made all the difference.”
Ms Joy Taylor-Ebanks

Programme participant Ms Joy Taylor-Ebanks, reduced her monthly energy use by 43%, from 1207 kWh in November 2023 to 529 kWh by November 2024, after energy-efficient upgrades. Across 10 homes, average consumption fell to 714 kWh, saving KYD$86 monthly. The Residential Energy Efficiency Programme helps residents enjoy cooler homes and lower bills.
