I agree wholeheartedly with the renaming of Cayman’s annual achievement awards in order to distinguish between recipients and that rightly venerated and small group of ‘National Heroes’.
However, the use of the word ‘recognition’ for these people is not without its pitfalls. Being ‘recognised’, if I may say so somewhat jokingly, might be a question of short-sightedness on the part of the viewer, what they happen to be wearing on the part of those viewed.
Might I respectfully suggest that a far better word to use is ‘Champion’ – so versatile as both noun and verb and more than appropriate for all those who have made such valuable contributions to the nation in one way or another.
It might also be worth considering having the two groups of people, ‘Heroes’ and ‘Champions’, celebrated on different days. Just a thought.
