Doctors Hospital has won a notable accreditation from global standards organisation Joint Commission International.

The health facility is the first in Cayman to be awarded eighth edition status  – the toughest set of standards yet – by the commission.

Margo McCrae, director of strategic service at the George Town-based hospital, said in a press release, “This milestone represents more than a seal. It is a promise to our patients, our staff and our community.

“Achieving this accreditation required every member of our team to rise to new challenges, adapt with resilience and deliver excellence at every level of care.

“I am deeply proud of our staff for proving that exceptional healthcare is not only possible here in the Cayman Islands, it is thriving here.”

Joint Commission International (JCI), a subsidiary of a US-based parent which accredits 22,000 US healthcare institutions, was set up to boost patient care and help international health care organisations, public health agencies, health ministries and others to evaluate and improve patient care and safety in more than 60 countries.

International hospitals can ask to be accredited by experts from the organisation to demonstrate quality of service. JCI status is considered a stamp of approval by medical travellers from the US.

The latest round of JCI accreditation introduced new standards, including environmental sustainability and a reduced carbon footprint, as well as an assessment of the institution’s global health impact through tackling health problems that transcend national borders.

Dr. Yaron Rado, chairman of the Doctors Hospital board, highlighted the global significance of the honour.

“From its inception, that is for the last 25 years, Doctors Hospital has always believed that the Cayman Islands deserves and can have locally-owned healthcare that meets the very highest international standards,” he said in the release.

“Receiving JCI’s accreditation aligning with their most recent standards, which are in fact the strictest yet, validates that belief and demonstrates our ability to meet global benchmarks for sustainability, innovation and patient safety.

“This is not just an achievement for our hospital, but for the entire Cayman community.”

‘Commitment to improvement’

A spokeswoman for the hospital said the accreditation put it “among an elite group of healthcare providers worldwide”.

She added, “It demonstrates the hospital’s commitment to continuous improvement, adherence to international best practices and dedication to providing exceptional care to the Cayman Islands community.”

The news was announced as Doctors Hospital and Integra Healthcare held the second annual healthcare conference, ‘Frontiers of Healthcare 2025: Building Resilient Healthcare Systems’, at the Hotel Indigo Grand Cayman.

The day-long event was designed to examine the state of health of medical services in Cayman and highlight future developments.

More than 300 medical professionals from Cayman and elsewhere attended the conference to look at trends and technological advances in areas such as dementia, medical imaging and cancer treatment.

The conference also included international expert and panel discussions designed to “build connections that shape the future of health care”.
