Those who purchase economy-class tickets on Cayman Airways on or after 1 Nov. 2025 for international flights will have to pay a little more for their checked baggage.
The updated fee structure, which was announced in statement issued 17 Oct., offers a discounted rate of US$30 each for the first and second checked bag if baggage fees are paid online or through the airline’s mobile app. For those paying at the airport or through the Cayman Airways call centre, the cost will be US$35 each for the first and second checked bag.
Cayman Airway’s current baggage policy has a baggage fee of US$25 each for the first and second checked bags on international flights, with no differentiation as to the method of payment.
“Passengers are encouraged to purchase their bags via the new Cayman Airways mobile app or online at www.caymanairways.com to enjoy both savings and a smoother check-in experience at the airport,” the airline’s statement said.
Fees for additional bags three through eight will also be revised, but Cayman Airways did not specify what the increases would be.
“While representing a small increase, the new fees will continue to allow Cayman Airways to offer passengers the lowest baggage rates of any airline serving the Cayman Islands,” the announcement stated.
Something that won’t change is the 55-pound weight allowance per checked bag, which exceeds the industry standard by five pounds.
The baggage fee increases only apply to those flying economy class; business class passengers will still enjoy three free bags up to 55 pounds each on international flights.
For now, the baggage fees between Grand Cayman and the Sister Islands or between Cayman Brac and Little Cayman remain unchanged.
Fee justification
In justifying the baggage fees increase, the announcement said: “Cayman Airways last adjusted its baggage fees in 2022, when it standardised its rates across routes, and has since continued to absorb rising operational costs while facing intensified competition on international services. The updated fees will support the airline’s ongoing commitment to providing affordable, reliable and high-quality air service for the Cayman Islands.”
The Cayman Airways statement said the national airline ‘remains committed to providing exceptional value and showcasing the warmth, hospitality, and pride of the Caymanian people’.
“Despite ongoing cost pressures and global competition, the airline continues to offer some of the most competitive baggage fees and inclusive services in the region.”
