Cayman basketball has reached a significant milestone as both its men’s and women’s 3×3 teams have officially qualified for the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland.

This marks the first time in history that the territory will be represented by both genders in the 3×3 basketball discipline at this international event scheduled to take place at the SEC Centre in Glasgow from 24-29 July.

The announcement comes as the Commonwealth Games Federation confirmed the lineup of nations for the upcoming competition.

Local impact and selection

Collin Anglin, president of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association, praised the achievement as a “defining moment for the programme”.

“This is a historic and extremely proud moment for Cayman basketball. To have both our men’s and women’s 3×3 teams qualify for the Commonwealth Games for the first time speaks volumes about the hard work of our athletes, coaches, and the continued growth of the sport in the Cayman Islands.

“We are excited to represent Cayman on one of the world’s biggest sporting stages and showcase the talent and heart our players bring every time they step on the court,” he said.

While the qualification of the Cayman teams is confirmed, Anglin confirmed that the specific rosters have not yet been finalised.

He stated that the individual players selected to represent the Cayman Islands will likely be announced approximately two months prior to the start of the competition in July.

Additionally, the official draw and match schedules for 3×3 basketball at this year’s games are expected to be released by organisers at a later date.

Competition fields and qualification

The men’s tournament will feature the Cayman Islands alongside Australia, Fiji, Guyana, Jamaica, Kenya, Malaysia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Scotland, and Singapore.

The women’s bracket includes the Cayman Islands, Australia, Fiji, Jamaica, Kenya, New Zealand, Papua New Guinea, Scotland, Singapore, Tonga, and Uganda.

For both genders, one final European qualification slot remains to be filled and this “will be decided through the upcoming Home Nations Qualification Tournament in May” as stated on the Commonwealth Sport website.

“This final qualification route is available due to Great Britain’s position as the highest-ranked European Commonwealth nation in 3×3 Basketball”, the website stated.

Tournament format and logistics

The 3×3 format, which debuted at the Birmingham 2022 Games, has seen its field expanded from eight to 12 teams per gender for the 2026 edition.

The format is characterised by its high speed and condensed structure with matches being played on a half-court with a single hoop and a 12-second shot clock. Each game lasts a maximum of 10 minutes, although a team can end the match early by reaching 21 points.

Glasgow 2026 is expected to host approximately 3,000 athletes from 74 nations and territories and will feature 10 sports and six Para sports held across four venues throughout the city. These figures make the event the largest sporting event in the United Kingdom this year.
