As Cayman’s population grows and medical needs increase, so too does the demand for a steady and reliable blood supply.
That’s the message from Kristine Miranda, medical technologist at the Cayman Islands Health Services Authority, who is urging residents to think beyond seasonal giving and commit to donating blood throughout the year.
“The blood drives that we do really help us tremendously in our blood supply,” she said. “In order for us to sustain the needs of our patients, we always encourage everyone to donate blood.”
Her comments come as the Community Blood Drive Challenge is set to take place on Friday, 27 Feb., between 9am and 1:30pm at the Compass Media parking lot. The friendly competition encourages blood donors to support their favourite radio station while making a potential life-saving contribution.
Participants can choose between Compass Media’s stations – Z99, Gold 94.9, Rooster 101 and Island 98.9 – book a time slot and roll up their sleeves.
Meeting demand, but needing more
According to Miranda, Cayman is currently meeting local demand, thanks in part to an increase in blood drives.
“We are averaging up to 170 donors each month,” she said, noting that this represents an increase compared to previous years.
Still, the need remains constant. “There is always a need, especially in emergency cases, accidents, trauma cases, maternity, dialysis and even the preterm babies,” Miranda said.
Some blood types are consistently more sought after than others.
Type O blood – particularly O-negative and O-positive – is in constant demand due to its critical role in emergency and routine care. O-negative is known as the universal red cell donor and is often used in life-threatening situations when a patient’s blood type has not yet been identified. O-positive, the most common blood type, is widely needed for regular transfusions across the health care system.
The Community Blood Drive Challenge is intended not only to bolster supply but also to strengthen community engagement.
Those unable to participate on 27 Feb. can donate directly at the Cayman Islands Blood Bank, located on the second floor of the Anthony S. Eden Hospital, formerly the George Town Hospital. The Blood Bank also hosts mobile drives throughout the year, offering additional opportunities for residents to give.
