The Mourant Inter-Primary School Basketball League concluded its season on Friday, 27 March, marking the end of a competitive schedule that began in the second week of January.
This year’s league featured a significant field of 32 boys’ and girls’ teams, representing a substantial level of participation across the primary school system.
To manage the high volume of teams, organisers split the league into four distinct zones.
Throughout the season, each zone participated in round-robin competitions held every Friday at various primary school venues across Grand Cayman.
Following these preliminary rounds, the top two teams from each zone advanced to the playoff finals held during the last week of March.
In the girls’ division, Prospect Primary School secured first place in the Champion’s Cup, followed by Sir John A Cumber Primary School in second place.
The boys’ Champion’s Cup saw Cayman Prep emerge as the league winners, with Island Primary taking second place and First Baptist Christian School finishing in third.
In the Consolation Cup bracket, First Baptist claimed the girls’ title over Footsteps, while Footsteps won the boys’ Consolation Cup championship against second-place finishers Island Primary.
“I am extremely happy about how much the league has grown, the level of enthusiasm and the display of talent that we’ve seen. The future of basketball is bright,” said Collin Anglin, president of the Cayman Islands Basketball Association.
“The primary school league has been happening now for well over 20 years, but over the past five years it has exploded. Particularly due to the partnership with the Cayman Islands Basketball Association, the Department of Sports and especially the Department of Education that now has school sport coordinators in place who ensure these various tournaments take place and have a permanent fixture on the school calendar,” Anglin added.
