Cayman has officially entered a new era of grassroots motorsport as the Cayman Motoring Federation launched its first-ever National Auto Slalom League.
This inaugural event, which kicked off its opening round at the Fosters Airport Overflow Parking Lot on 12 April, marked the beginning of a structured six-race championship series eligible to licensed drivers aged 17 and over.
This series will see drivers compete across multiple events throughout the year, earning points based on their performance at each round.
The opening round saw eight drivers take to a precision-based slalom course designed to test control, consistency and driver skill. Competitors entered Stock and Modified categories, and their results were calculated by totalling the two best times from their three timed runs.
Final results of round one
In the Stock category, Damean ‘Max’ Simpson took the top spot behind the wheel of a BMW E90 with a score of 85.86 seconds.
The Modified category was led by Rory Scheepers, who secured first place in a Volkswagen GTI with a time of 69.88 seconds.
While the focus was on overall consistency across two timed runs, Adis Kevorkian managed to clock the fastest single lap of the day, finishing in 33.26 seconds in his VW GTI.
Scheepers, Cayman Motoring Federation member and race director, said, “The level of driving we saw today was impressive, especially for the opening round of a brand-new league. The course challenged precision and consistency, which is what Auto Slalom is all about. It’s exciting to see drivers already pushing themselves to improve with each run.”
Jane Scaletta, Cayman Motoring Federation president and event secretary, added, “This first Auto Slalom event of 2026 represents a defining moment for grassroots motorsport in the Cayman Islands.
“We are building more than competition – we are creating a structured, safe, and sustainable pathway for drivers to develop their skills. It’s incredibly encouraging to see the level of interest and engagement from our community.”
The league’s upcoming rounds are scheduled for 31 May, 12 July, 9 Aug., 20 Sept. and 25 Oct., concluding with a December awards ceremony to celebrate overall champions and standout performances.
Auto Slalom explained
Often held in controlled spaces like car parks, Auto Slalom is a precision-oriented motorsport where competitors weave through cone-marked circuits.
Because the discipline prioritises car control and technical accuracy over top speed, it remains a highly accessible and safe entry point into racing.
Success is measured against the clock, though drivers must maintain discipline to avoid time penalties incurred by striking cones or deviating from the prescribed path.
“All events are delivered in accordance with Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile-aligned auto slalom (Motorsport in a Box) regulations and are supported by trained marshals certified through Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile programmes,” said the Cayman Motoring Federation.
