Drayson Watson appeared in court Monday on charges relating to the stabbing of 78-year-old Kenneth Christian, who died over the weekend.
Chief Magistrate Angelyn Hernandez granted bail to Watson, who has been charged with wounding, wounding with intent and two counts of possession of a prohibited weapon in relation to the stabbing outside the Turtle Centre in West Bay on 20 May.
Christian died on Saturday, 23 May. The court heard that no post mortem had yet been carried out, so there was currently no official cause of death on record. Therefore, the bail hearing was heard on the wounding charges that had been filed against Watson.
As Watson left the dock at the end of the bail hearing, a woman who had been sitting in the public gallery shouted at him, “You’re a dead man, you hear me. A dead man.”
During the hearing, defence attorney Amelia Fosuhene, appearing for Watson, handed her phone to the chief magistrate to view video footage shot at the time of the incident at the Turtle Centre.
Watson, an employee of the Turtle Centre who is in charge of quotas of turtle meat that can be distributed to purchasers, and Christian, also known as Kenneth Edroy Barnes, got in an altercation over the allocation of turtle meat, the court heard.
Hernandez granted bail to Watson, stating he was not considered a flight risk. She put several conditions in place, including that Watson is to surrender his travel documents, wear an electronic monitor, adhere to a 6pm to 5am curfew, reside at a specific address, report to George Town police station three times a week and not interfere with any civilian witnesses in the case.
As wounding cases involving grievous bodily harm are automatically transmitted to the Grand Court, the chief magistrate ordered that Watson was to appear before the higher court on Friday, 29 May.
