Body recovered off Seven Mile Beach, believed to be missing jet skier

The body of a person believed to be a missing jet skier was recovered from waters off Seven Mile Beach after a search involving the Coast Guard, police and others, the office of the commissioner of police has confirmed.

“Following a coordinated and extensive search effort led by the Cayman Islands Coast Guard, the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) Air Operations Unit (AOU) – with an observer from Customs and Border Control (CBC) on board – has located and recovered the body of a deceased individual in the waters off Seven Mile Beach,” police said in a statement.

“The deceased is suspected to be the missing individual who was the subject of the ongoing search and rescue operation initiated on the night of Saturday, June 6.”

Police said formal identification procedures are currently pending.

A search-and-rescue operation had been initiated on Saturday after a reporting party, who was known to the missing individual, discovered a riderless jet ski adrift approximately one mile offshore, the Cayman Islands Coast Guard said in a social media post shortly after 11pm on Saturday.

Upon being notified, Coast Guard units immediately deployed and conducted an extensive search of the surrounding waters. The search-and-rescue operation continued late into Saturday night and recommenced Sunday, 7 June at 5.30am.

The Coast Guard extended its gratitude to all responding agencies, including the RCIPS, the Cayman Islands Fire Service, and Customs and Border Control, for their assistance and inter-agency coordination.

Authorities said further details will be released to the public once formal identification has been completed and an investigation has run its course.
