The fledgling Cayman Equine Sanctuary is seeking volunteers and business donors to assist with the operation and financing of its facilities near Savannah.
Founded last summer, the sanctuary has two resident horses and has been approached about assuming responsibility for four more, said Dr. Brandy Darby, sanctuary director and a teaching veterinarian at St. Matthew’s University in Grand Cayman.
“Right now, the size of the property and available finances have prohibited us from taking in more horses, but we are actively working on ways to expand the programme,” she said.
The equine sanctuary has partnered with local boys and girls home facilities and allows for the children to help with grooming, feeding and caring for the horses – Annie and Gracie.
“The homes use the horses as a reward for good behaviour and we are developing a certificate programme for them to work through with us,” Dr. Darby said.
