Skaters hit the streets

Local hockey is going back to the streets for charity.

The Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club will stage its second annual street hockey tournament at Camana Bay next Saturday, 14 January. The tournament is to help grow the sport and raise money for local charities CaymanHospice Care and UNICEF Cayman Kids.

With the majority of players in the Kings Youth Roller Hockey League, one component of the tournament is to have one member of each team not be in the league. This caveat is to help introduce kids to a new sport and help grow the hockey programme in Cayman.

Roller hockey is a relatively new discipline that’s caught on quickly. There were 160 participants in last year’s event and there is expected to be over 200 registered players this year. In fact the 2010 tournament was a great success that raised funds in excess of $9000 for local and over-seas charities. The hockey club expects to raise more funds this year through additional sponsorship and increased registrants.

Street hockey, played in running shoes, requires minimal equipment. In most cases it can be done with a plastic hockey stick and is an inexpensive activity that can be done in driveways.

At this time, the major sponsors include Camana Bay, BritCay and The Security Centre. Registration forms are currently available.
