Camana Bay stages street skaters

A local hockey club is a hosting a unique fundraiser outdoors.

The Cayman Islands Youth Roller Hockey Club will stage its second annual street hockey tournament at Camana Bay this Saturday, 14 January, from 9am. The tournament help grows the sport and raise money for local charities CaymanHospice Care and UNICEF Cayman Kids.

Hockey Club representative Nigel Windsor states the idea for the fundraiser had long been present.

“The idea started last year when we were looking for an active event that children would enjoy, but also one that would engage them in philanthropy,” Windsor said. “The idea of our youth helping other kids initially meant raising over US$10,000 last year for National Hockey League team the Tampa Lightning and their children’s charities as well as the local Cancer Society.”

Due to the popularity of last year’s event, another rink will be added so there will be four in total. The Britcay, Ernst and Young, DART Foundation and Camana Bay rinks will be prominently named along the street running north and south beside the Arts and Recreation Centre at Camana Bay.

Aside from the contests, fundraising initiatives are ongoing throughout the day. There is a silent auction with items such as a one month membership to Crossfit, a Bubba Tailgate Propane Grill from Home Gas and a Florida Panthers signed jersey. Caribo Sausages will be grilling on site and Fosters Food Fair and Progressive Distributors donated water and Gatorade. There will also be a bake sale.
