Pauline shoots Stars past Unity

All Stars got off to a winning start in their 2012 netball campaign.

The perennial contenders beat Unity 33-17 in an A team showdown for the 2012 Cayman Islands Netball Association open league. The opener for the national women’s competition took place at the netball courts at Truman Bodden Sports Complex.

Leading the way for AS was Goal Shooter Pauline Bodden, who scored over 15 points for her team. Bodden states the victory will help her squad get in gear after a long lay-off.

“It was a good game considering the season just started,” Bodden said. “Most of the players are rusty coming off the Christmas break. It was a one-sided game though we kind of lost a little momentum in the third quarter with substitutes.”

The result was never in doubt as AS were ahead the whole game. Aside from Bodden’s shooting, AS benefitted from new recruit Lisa Kemp’s decision making at the Goal Attack position. Stacey Reid-Satahoo also chipped in a few points at the GA spot. All got plenty of possession thanks to Wing Attack Kimesha Walters and Centre Lyneth Monteith.

Defensively the green and purple crew were solid. Newcomer Azelle Kay used her height well at Goal Defence and shared playing time with flag footballer Katherine Maw. Goal Keeper duties were handled by former Maples defender Teneisha Wilson and Wing Defence Kayon Clarke hampered Unity’s passing. The AS subs were Whanda Faud, Adena Miller and Nicole Williams.

For Unity a big positive was the play of Cherita Robinson. She used her height to split time on offence as GS and on defence as GK. Robinson states in spite of the final score, her club gave maximum effort.

“We did our best,” Robinson said. “We were up against a strong team and we did what we could do.”

Robinson had help offensively from Sheree McKenzie and Kenoya Goldbourne. Zanya Pinnock steadied the defence. The rest of the roster saw Naketa Boyd, Rachel Graham, Kerry Scarlett, Pollyien Francis and Beverly Scott.

The AS A team play next Saturday, 28 January, against Roma B. Unity A are not in action until 11 February when they take on their B team. Both games are at 6.30pm.

League action continues on Thursday, 19 January, at 6.30pm as Rising Stars A take on All Stars B.
